A cath lab technician, also known as a cardiovascular technologist or cardiac catheterization technologist, is a healthcare professional who assists physicians in performing diagnostic and therapeutic procedures on the heart and blood vessels.
Cath lab technicians are responsible for preparing and maintaining catheterization equipment, monitoring patients during procedures, and ensuring that all sterile procedures are followed. They also assist with patient care before, during, and after catheterization procedures, including taking vital signs, administering medications, and providing patient education.
To become a cath lab technician, individuals typically need to complete an accredited training program in cardiovascular technology and obtain certification, such as the Registered Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist (RCIS) credential offered by Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI).
Cath lab technicians work in hospitals, cardiac catheterization labs, and other medical facilities where catheterization procedures are performed. They work closely with other healthcare professionals, including cardiologists, nurses, and radiologic technologists, to provide high-quality care to patients with heart and vascular conditions.
